Presentation Summary

This discussion will focus on the basics of filmcoating and touch briefly on more in-depth topics. The introduction covers why a company would choose to filmcoat a tablet, which adds both cost to the final product, and complexity to the overall manufacturing process. Considerations for preparing a core tablet formulation for a filmcoating process include both tablet image (shape, size, logo) and excipient selection. As important as the core tablet is the selection of the correct film coating which encompasses the regulatory considerations for the intended markets, the desired aesthetic and functional performance characteristics of the film coating, and the tablet-filmcoating interactions that might lead a formulator to select one film coating over another. Finally, a brief discussion on the actual process of filmcoating will include equipment selection and use guidelines, basic trouble shooting, and optimization and scale up of the process from lab scale to a production basis.
